In China, draftsmen have truly affected the spatial turn of events and advancement of its modernized urban areas, which have become an expectation of numerous countries. Adding to the advanced human scene that includes the contemporary building structures, Ma Yansong is one of th e Chinese designers who have taken the West by an astonishment. Consequently, this paper looks to dissect the Ma Yansongââ¬â¢s architecrural plans as a portion of the human scenes of Chinese creation that are bit by bit getting powerful in China. Mama Yansong Landscape Being amidst innovation and powerful on the insurgencies as found in the cutting edge days, Chinese city arranging is taking another type of cutting edge compositional structure. Under Ma Yansong as the originator, the MAD modelers of China have assumed a principal job in the cutting edge lodging and city arranging of the Asian nations, with structures in China and Canada mirroring the MAD plans (Wang, 2013). As the fundamental author of the Beijingââ¬â¢s MAD engineers, Ma Yansong has bit by bit become the most compelling draftsman of the new time of building blast in China and different pieces of the western countries. Starting its impact in Canada subsequent to tying down a chance to plan the Absolute Towers i n the Mississauga in Canada, Ma Yansong and the MAD modelers increased a monstrous triumph in the wake of finishing ventures doled out to them in Canada (Wang, 2013). Among the popular scene known to mirror the design works of Ma Yansong and the MAD engineers is the scene of the Shanshui city. Planned and situated in Guiyang, Shanshui City is among the latest tasks of MAD draftsmen, which have made the modelers to demand the imaginative structures as prominent in the advanced China (Wang, 2013). The authenticity of Shanshui city presents the human instinct and the customary plans of the Chinese individuals, which incorporate the area of urban communities deliberately to the common environmental factors, which are predominantly mountains and water. Social Aspects Eminent in the Shanshui City Landscaping is a craft of altering highlights on the land to improve their stylish worth and catch human culture and regular habitat. Evidently, Chinese recorded and building workmanship stays bound to this aesthetic practice (Cosgrove, 1989). In spite of the fact that it accompanies its own uniqueness in the structural workmanship, the Shanshui city presents an excellent plan conceived by social parts of the antiquated Chinese individuals (Wang, 2013). Components of social develops in the Shanshui are what gave the city its name as Shanshui City, a deduction from shan and shui, which implies mountains and water individually. Shanshui City rose up out of the MAD draftsmen as a mix of Chinese urban development and the imagery of regular habitat that presents the mountain-water customary love and mirrors the plan hypothesis and methods of the antiquated city Chinese (Wang, 2013). As their durable compositional approach, the regular Chinese organizers planned urban communities and towns while watching the vital area of the common and natural highlights that for the most part incorporate mountains and water. The presence of the structural idea encompassing the Shanshui city goes back to the love of characteristic assets like water and mountains where people appreciated the water waves and the states of land that i nfluenced their private locales (Wang, 2013).Advertising We will compose a custom exposition test on Landscape: Ma Yansong the Shanshui City explicitly for you for just $16.05 $11/page Learn More The Chinese have a long social history of having a characteristic soul of regarding and acknowledging nature, an angle that spurred Ma Yansong and the MAD engineering group to utilize the possibility of the mountain-water love to build up the Shanshui city. As the fundamental parts of the indigenous habitat, water and mountains are basic highlights in Shanshui plan, which follow the Chinese culture and philosophy of scene design (Wang, 2013). The Shanshui city is a cutting edge and one of a kind spatial arranging in China with a fitting reconciliation of the scene and engineering, which contains fake plans water and mountains as edges that show up in a wavelike way (MAD Architects, 2012). Such plans identify with the antiquated Chinese culture and expressions, which numerous structures in C hina portray. Social Aspects Found in the Shanshui City Human scenes speak to the monetary perspective on countries, as the nearness of urban focuses with ground-breaking super urban areas and business structures regularly impacts the financial development of the nations (Wheelers, 2008). The Shanshui city, in spite of the fact that it despite everything fills in as a modernized spatial arranging with minimal direct association with the authentic advancement of the Republic of China, it mirrors a few social parts of the Chinese nationals. Depicting the long-standing history of the Chinese city arranging, which includes the worry of the normal natural surroundings in the arranging, a portion of the significant social variables interface with the Shanshui city (MAD Architects, 2012). As a new compositional craft of setting up present day urban communities in China, the component of a national economy that the engineers created through the mountain-water spatial arranging normally mirrors the Chinese standpoint as far as national riches (MAD Architects, 2012). The modernization of the Chinese individuals starts from human progress to monetary development, and the structures and foundation of the huge urban areas and the urbanization procedure is a basic financial part of the Chinese. Shanshui city is steadily turning into a free city in the pieces of Guiyang, an area that has likewise gotten significant national consideration as far as financial turn of events (Wang, 2013). Creating from a blend of urban super city arra nging and the common habitat, a perspective that numerous Chinese have lived with during the regular time, Shanshui city is developing as a modernized Chinese urban city with all types of style (MAD Architects, 2012). With its proposed industrialization endeavors, Shanshui is a town that is indivisible from the idea of financial improvement in China. Differentiation clear in the Shanshui City scene Shanshui City speaks to the human scene created through fake and structural plans couple with mountain-water building workmanship that gives a specific type of difference. The complexity that is innate in the Shanshui city involves the contrast between the modernization of spatial arranging that is regular over the world and the Chinese engineering that contains various social components (MAD Architects, 2012). Shanshui appears only an innovative craftsmanship, admired through imaginative procedures and not handy workmanship that people can envision. As per Wheeler (2008, p. 413), ââ¬Å" if nearby or territorial governments see New Urban structure to be alluring, at that point more grounded activities seem important to bring it into reality.â⬠The Shanshui proposition and the in progress city ventures appear to be illogical to human practice as the craft of setting up a city of such a structure differentiates the truth of the cutting edge spatial arranging and lodging plans (Wang, 2013). When seen from the most pragmatic way in the structuring of current urban communities including the famous western capitals, the craft of Shanshui presents a characteristic type of scene as opposed to the most counterfeit plans. Adjustments to the social planning Possessing components of social structures, the structures of heads reflect Chinese culture. As the Chinese have constantly planned structures of the sovereigns while analyzing the impact of regular assets on these structures, the component of change is mostly indistinct, however innate in the plan (Wang, 2013). Our writers will create an original "Weighted Average Number Of Common Shares Outstanding Finance Essay" essay for you Create order There is no guarantee that if this year the company made 10 million profit, in the next year it will make the same or higher profit. Earnings per share and Price-Earnings ratio are two important types of earnings figure that investors will pay much attention when making the investment decision. Earnings per share (EPS) of a business is a portion its profit allocated to each outstanding share of common stock. It tells us the net profitability of a business, and shows the portion of a businesss profit that is allocated to each share of the business. For instance, if you have 1000 shares, the EPS number can show you, what your amount of share of the profit from the business is. In calculating EPS we have to subtract any dividends paid to investors, because that amount of money is distributed among shareholders and investors. We use the formula below to calculate Earnings per Share. Earnings per Share (EPS) = Net Income ? Dividends on Preferred Shares Weighted Average Numb er of Common Shares Outstanding Next, Price-Earnings ratio (P/E) is the most popular method to measure of the cost of a stock and investors use this method widely. Basically, Price-Earnings of a stock shows us how much investors are ready to pay per dollar of earnings. In another words, a P/E ratio of 40 this means that investors in the stock are ready to pay $40 for each $1 of earning that the business generates. We use the formula bellow to calculate P/E ratio: C:UsersHoangAnhDesktopprice-to-earnings-formula.gif Source: https://www.theoptionsguide.com/price-to-earnings-ratio.aspx Generally, a low P/E is defined a sign that a stock may be undervalued or it is expected by investors to have a poor future earnings. On the contrary, a P/E with a high ratio indicates an over-valued stock, or investors expect a significant increase in earnings. The interest fact is that usually investors tend to buy a stock with a low P/E ratio rather buying the one with a high ration, because t hey will get more earning for their money. Earning only tells the story what the company did so far, but not what the company is going to do in the future. Definitely, the past earnings are important; however the potential future earnings figure is also important. This is important as if investors want to invest effectively and profitably, they would like to be sure that the companys earnings will increase in the future or at least wont drop. For example, we need to know if any new product is coming out or not. Like, Apple, it produces new iPhone every 6 months, so it can meet consumers changing demands, therefore the earnings potential will be growing. Another example proving that earnings are the past information of the company and mostly helps to estimate only the company in the past is Nokia Company. In 2009 they were the biggest phone company and had 49% of the market share which is huge; they almost dominated the market and had the huge earning statistics. Who could have t hought that such a successful company with a gigantic earnings figure, in 2012 will have only 8% of market share and the earnings figure has dropped and keeps dropping significantly. This happened because they do not produce many new and innovative products. They kept and keep producing old-fashioned phones with old technologies and do not change the product line to meet the fast changing demand of consumers and trends of the market. Their past earnings figures are still high, however the present earnings figures are very low, and the future figures, apparently will be dropping. That is why the investors do not always estimate the companys future based only on earning figures; they take other factors into consideration. That is why the financial reporting is changing to meet the investors requirements. Changing Financial Reporting Firstly, financial reporting is written records of a businesss financial situation. They include standard reports like the balance sheet, income or profit and loss statements, and cash flow statement. It is one of the most basic components of business information; it helps to communicate to external parties (such as investors, creditors, suppliers and etc.) about financial position of the company. In the past investors based only on financial ratios provided by the company to estimate the companys financial position and its potential growth. However, as mentioned before financial ratio talks only about the past figures, but this may not be repeated in the future. Nowadays, the market is very competitive, the world is a market, you may be in your country market, and companies from other country can come into your market. Hence, to be profitable and competitive you must know more information, besides the financial ratio. Before investing, investors will likely watch the financial ratio and also non-financial statement of the company. They might want to know about information on the state of the economy, industry and competitive considerations, market forces, technological change, and the quality of management and the workforce are not directly reflected in a companys financial statements. One of popular non-financial reporting is SWOT analysis. It examines the strength and weakness, opportunity and thread of the company. SWOT analysis shows to investors the objective of the company or project and identifies the internal and external factors that are favourable and unfavourable to achieve that objective. Strengths: characteristics of the company or team that give it an advantage over others in the industry Weakness: characteristics of the company that put it in disadvantage in comparison to others Opportunities: external chances that allow the company to increase sales or profit Threats: external factors that can cause trouble to the company C:UsersHoangAnhDesktopswot_img2.gif Source: https://zeldor.biz/2011/01/swot-analysis/ Investors will look if the company is using its strengths to take advantage of market opportunities, and if they can identify and work on weakness that might slow down their ability to take advantage of those opportunities. Another important factor that investors are keen to watch closely is how the company is aware of its threads, how they use their strength to eliminate the potential threads or at least manage to minimise them. Additionally, investors also care about if the company can work to define the weakness that may increase the criticality of threats. C:UsersHoangAnhDesktopSWOT-Analysis.jpg Source: https://www.easy-marketing-strategies.com/swot-analysis.html Here is an example of SWOT Analysis, in this case we analysise Apple Company. The smart and experienced investors are likely to analyse the financial statements and also will use other non-financial statements, such as this SWOT analysis into consideration before making a decision about whether they should invest in Apple company or not. Conclusion In this assignment we have defined 3 parts of financial statements and its importance as a source of information for investors. Additionally, we have discussed two types of performance measures that investors pay much of attention to makes investment decisions: Traditional methods and Modern Approaches. In the last part we investigated why emphasizing only on earnings figures are problematic and discussed how financial reporting is changing to meet investors requirements, providing an example of non-financial reporting SWOT Analysis.

Everyday Life Is Shaped By One Force - 1706 Words
Everyday life is shaped by one force: music. Everyone listens to music every single day of their lives and, whether they realize it or not, it shapes their lives. Music affects peopleââ¬â¢s moods and interactions. People interested in different genres will also act differently because various genres have separate effects on peopleââ¬â¢s minds. Each genre has its own personality that it is generally related to, however not everyone who enjoys a specific genre is the stereotypical audience, such as a normally happy and quiet person listening to loud, angry metal music. This is because of the how unique one organ is in each and every person: the brain. Everyoneââ¬â¢s brain works differently and reacts to any given situation in a different manner because of that. The brain takes all the information given to it by the senses, sight, tough, taste, hearing, and smell, and decides how the body needs to react to the stimuli. These reactions are sent out using the bodyââ¬â¢s nervou s system, of which the brain is the center. Electrical impulses are sent through the body via small nerves called synapses. These small cells all have a receiver and a transmitter in order to get the message from the cell before it and share the message with the next cell. These cells in turn tell the cells in whatever body part they are in control of what to do or how to react to external stimuli, such as music. Judiasm Essay Example For Students
Judiasm Essay Judaism was a parent of Christianity, and we probably know moreabout it than any other religion, excluding our own, right off the top of ourheads. The ancestors of the Jews, called the Israelites, established akingdom in Canaan-the land of Milk and Honey. The Israelites first beganto see themselves in a special relationship with their God at about 1000B.C.E. God had selected them to be a Chosen People. God had offered theChosen People a covenant, or special agreement. In this covenant, theIsraelites promised to worship only God, and in return God promised thempreservation throughout history and the land of Canaan. Canaan was latercalled Judah, Israel, and Palestine. Central to the understanding of the Jewish convenant is theprosperous herdsman who heard and followed Gods call, Abraham. Abraham answered Gods call and led his family from Ur of the Chaldees toCanaan. Abraham mad a son, Isaac, and a grandson Jacob who alsoinherited the convenant. Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob were called thepatriarchs, or the founders of Judiasm. Moses, being one of the great religious leaders in history, Godrevealed his name Yahweh to him. Yahweh means ?to be? in Hebrew. Theevents recorded in Exodus indicate that through Moses a new and deeperunderstanding of God was revealed. The worship of Yahweh was unknownbefore Moses. The Israelites as a whole began to realize that the God ofMoses was a very ?jealous God,? who would not tolerate worship of anyother god. As the book of Exodus opens, we find that the Israelites are slaves inthe land of Egypt. Exodus became the heart and soul of Judaism. Mosesis the key character in Exodus and one of great religious leaders in history. The Exodus story is one that is very touching. The persecution of the Jews in the 1930s was horrible and will beremembered forever. After being crushed in the economic disaster in theGreat Depression and being totally defeated in WWI, the time was perfectfor Hitler to take anti-Semitism, or hatred for Jews-to a whole differentlevel. Jews all over became victims of Hitlers awful laws such as those inPoland, Europe, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, and Germany. It was an awfultime for the Jewish people and in camps all over Germany and Poland Jewswere being murdered by starvation, disease, beating, mutilation, infection, gassing, and burning. Six million Jews, or about one-third of the entireJewish population of the world was completely wiped out. Only fiftythousand Jews remained after the war. The faith of the Jewish people wastested greatly during the Holocaust. The vivid living faith of the Jewish people is shown through theirmant festivals and celebrations throughout the year. Besides the Sabbathobservance, the Jewish year is filled with yearly festivals. They are allbased on the Jewish lunal calendar. Rosh Hashanah, or the Jewish newyear, which is celebrated in October, opens ten ?Days of Awe?. There is acelebration at the beginning and end of the two days. Yom Kippur is the?Day of Atonement?. It is considered the most holy day of the year and isthe closest to repentance. Five days after Yom Kippur, the Feast ofTabernacles, or Sukkoth, is celebrated. This is a week long feast in the fallcelebrating Gods presence when the Israelites were in the desert. TheRejoicing of the Torah closes the Sukkoth. Hanukkah is the Festival ofLights and is celebrated in December. It commemorates the restoration ofthe Temple after it was destroyed by the Syrians. Purin celebrates Estherssuccess to find a plot to massacre all Jews in the Persian Empire. One of the most important spring holy days is Pesach, or the Passover. Should School Be Compulsory Essays - Educational Stages, Youth
Should School Be Compulsory? Should School Be Compulsory? I believe that, after year 6, school should NOT be compulsory. By the time you have completed your primary education, you have learned the basic skills needed to get through life. High school is simply an extension of the basic skills learned in the primary school system, and is unneeded unless you pursue your education to a very high degree. It is not the government's decision whether or not you should have to attend high school. It should be the individual's choice, and forced on no-one, because by the time you have completed your primary education, you are old enough to make this decision. In high school there are more trouble makers who only disrupt the classes because they do not want to be there. These people disrupt the class and make it more difficult for those who are interested in the subject and want to learn. If school were optional, these students would not be in classes disrupting the class and ruining the chances of other students. Instead, they could be out in the workforce making money and beginning their careers earlier, giving them more experience in the workforce and making it easier for them to rise up to a postition of responsibility. If school were optional, it would benefit both the students that want to learn and those that do not, and would rather be in the workforce The sort of education that is offered in the high school system is not needed by all people. After primary school, students have learned the basic skills required to work in an untrained proffession, and do not need the more advanced education that high school offers. Sons or daughters often carry on the family business, and after completing their primary education, any further, more advanced education is unnecassary, because they can learn all they need to know about their future proffession from their father/mother. I believe that secondary education should be the individual's choice. It is unfair to force all young people (sometimes unnecessarily) to attend school when it may be the student's choice to enter the workforce. Just because some students want to complete their secondary education doesn't mean that all students do, and it is unfair to presume so.

World Bank and IMF
World Bank and IMF Introduction Often times, the world has suffered terrible financial crises. The most severe being the 2007-2008 global financial crisis. Every time, a financial crisis has struck, economic policy makers meet in a conference like they did in 1944 in Bretton Woods conference (Hellener, 2010, p. 1).Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on World Bank and IMF specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More However, the crisis has been recurrent regardless of the many policies that have been formulated. The failure of the policies in implementation has more often been blamed on policy mistakes made by developing world where the crisis emerges from (Hellener, 2010, p. 10). Out of this, the solution in 1980s was perceived could originate from loaning the developing countries. International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank were given the role of protecting global market from sovereign defaults and promote the adjustment programs in developing cou ntries (Hellener, 2010, p. 9). This paper will seek to evaluate the effects of IMF and World Bank in the developing countries. IMF and World Bank effects on Developed and Developing Countries Both IMF and World Bank definitions of developed and developing counties are based on either high or low capital incomes which in turn depict the degree of interaction into the global financial system. Their definitions have created an aspect of losers and winners (Esty, 2002, p. 2) where the developed countries are the winners, and the developing countries are the losers. The developing world has been placed in a losing position; most often than not, they are in need of support as they do not meet the set standards of the definition. It has always been an unfair judgment as the benefits of global trade may not be fairly distributed because not in all countries people are able to access free trade and fair economic growth (Esty, 2002, p. 3). Therefore, the developing countries are the ones who have been utilizing the policy set in Bretton Woods conference of borrowing, and thereby, giving IMF and World Bank a great chance of influence as policy enforcers. The influence of IMF and World Bank has greatly ââ¬Å"contributed to the strengthening of the macroeconomic framework of member countries, reducing the public sector deficits and public debt accumulation, improving monetary control and reducing the distortions and dislocation of resources brought about by high rates of inflationâ⬠(Buira, 2003, p. 1).Advertising Looking for essay on international relations? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More This has set the developing countries at a vulnerable position where they are the ones always borrowing money from the developed countries in order to pull up their economies. The capital flow ceases to be from the developed to the developing as the developing repays the loan. Most countries, for instance, have tri ed to use the ââ¬Å"theory of the second bestâ⬠but have been greatly opposed by IMF. The theory works when a country in a crisis through government intervention improves its welfare by the introduction of another country that is performing better economically (Buira, 2003, p. 1). This move was criticized by IMF even after Asia blaming the crisis on the speculative global financial flows (Hellener, 2010, p. 10). With such a kind of interference, Asia was not in a position to fill up the economic gap that was there hence the reason for its continued deterioration in the economy. The idea of ââ¬Å"market mechanismâ⬠developed in both IMF and World Bank operations have posed a very bad inequality problem for the countries that participate in the global financial markets. This is because, for a country to be considered as developed or developing there are factors like locality, population, and available resources that need to be considered. For example, it will be unfair to judge a country that does not participate in international trade for lack of resources to a country that has oil, gold and other minerals, which facilitate the same. There is, therefore, a global inequality as 20% of the world population takes 80% of the global resources while the rest is shared the remaining 20% of the world population. No wonder the gap between the 80% of the population that lacks even the basic amenities gets (Danaher, 2001, p. 25). However, time has revealed the hidden tricks played on developing countries. For example, in 2007-2008 during global financial crisis, China by market capitalization remained the only one that had the three largest banks. This exposed the U.S., having been one of the countries considered to be developed dependent on foreign support from China and elsewhere (Hellener, 2010, p. 11). This makes it illegitimate to consider US and Britain as having more economic power than China. There is a call to policy makers and financial analysts to q uestion the stability of the developed countries without the support of the developing countries. The cited example proved that financial flow is from the under developed to the developed world which leaves the developing world with more needs than the developed world yet they contribute a lot to the global economy.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on World Bank and IMF specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The policies of IMF and World Bank to rely on market solutions and international trade have been challenged with time. A countryââ¬â¢s economic power cannot be categorized by what the market produces as the market only achieves certain goals. This has caused its fault in evaluating the market failures that cause limited resource circulation in the developing countries (Buira, 2003, p. 3). For example, in a continent like Africa with a stable local economy had not suffered a financial crisis before the global trade came in. Everything was traded locally and there was no lack. One did not need to have money as the mode of trade was barter trade. Global trade has brought everything to tumble as the currency stability cannot be predicted. The U.S. dollar being the standard global currency keeps on fluctuating in value hence affecting the countries whose currencies are weaker than the dollar. This causes a great inequality where the market favors those with money as they make more money from the people who do not have. To sum up, the poor get poorer and the rich get richer, finally making it difficult for the gap to be bridged (Danaher, 2001, p. 32). World Bank and the IMF are the most powerful enforcers of growth and a system of measurement that hides the social and environmental cost of market-led growth. Any eminent change from them will flow down to every other person and foster economic progress (Danaher, 2001, p. 32). To regain their position to the public that has lost trust in them as economic leaders, they will be needed to start by correcting the mistakes they have done in setting unrealistic policies, which at the end get challenged every time there is a crisis. They also need to get back to the public where they, together with the public, will look for solutions that will operate at all times without subjecting any given country to any more financial risk. Conclusion From the discussion, it is evident that IMF and World Bank have contributed greatly to the widening of the gap between the developed and the developing counties. This comes about from their definition of the two, creating a superiority factor whereby, and countries with highest global finance interaction are being considered as developed.Advertising Looking for essay on international relations? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More The consideration has created financial inequality where the developed countries, which have the least population, enjoy the biggest share of the global economy while the rest remains to share the remainder. The results of this are that the rich countries continue becoming richer, and the poor countries get poorer. However, this has been challenged as it was analyzed in 2007-2008 that the developed countries actually depend on the developing counties. There is, therefore, a need for the World Bank and IMF to revise their policies and get back to re-establishing the developing countriesââ¬â¢ economy. They should device a way where the resources in the developing countries will remain with them to help them further in development. A Look at the Concerns Surrounding Internet Dependency
A Look at the Concerns Surrounding Internet Dependency The new wave of online technology has seen the Internet take an increasingly large place amongst society throughout the past few decades. The introduction of Internet-capable personal devices such as mobiles phones and tablets have granted users further access, triggering Internet traffic to grow exponentially. Due to this immense social shift towards the online, contemporary issues have appeared on both an intrapersonal and interpersonal scale. Reports during the 1990ââ¬â¢s, when the effects of the Internet intensified, suggested that some online users were becoming addicted in much the same way that others may become addicted to drugs, alcohol or gambling. However, as has been seen since this initial prognosis, Internet addiction has shown to be much more challenging and controversial to categorise than alternative substance-based addictions. In general terms, Internet addiction can be described as excessive preoccupations, behaviours or urges regarding computer and Internet use that leads to distress or impairment (Shaw Black, 2008). This research review will identify major issues in Internet addiction, as well as overview the major controversies, such as the inauguration of Internet addiction as a concept, tests founded to measure it, general verses specific addiction, addiction to gaming and the symptoms of excessive Internet use. Substantial research in the addiction field had been accomplished throughout the 20th century, however, due to the relative newness of Internet addiction, research that clearly outlines the stages of acquisition and the consequences of this type of addiction are less prominent. First mentions of computer addiction came through anecdotal reports in the late 1970ââ¬â¢s, specifically through the media, with colloquial terms such as ââ¬Ëcomputer addictsââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëmachine-code junkiesââ¬â¢ being used to describe heavy computer users. The general public widely accepted that symptoms of computer addiction included the impairment of psychological development and the breakdown of social relationships. A few academics took a partial interest in the field throughout the 1980ââ¬â¢s, however serious research was not conducted until Shotton (1991) partook in a study to further analyse this issue. Through a series of interviews and questionnaires, Shotton (1991) found that the effects of computer addiction were much less severe than previous literature and the media had suggested, citing logical reasons that explain why individuals engage in interacting with a machine so extensively. Shotton (1991) believed that introverted people who turned away from human relationships could find companionship through computing. Although revolutionary, Shottonââ¬â¢s research became quickly less pertinent when the Internet rose to fame in the mid-1990ââ¬â¢s drastically changing the function and usability of computers. At the 104th annual meeting of the American Psychological Association in 1996, Young (1998) presented a paper on the emergence of a new clinical disorder known as Internet addiction. Young reformed the prognosis in the DSM-IV (American Psychiatric Association, 1995) for Pathological Gambling into a brief questionnaire referred to as the Internet Addiction Diagnostic Questionnaire (IADQ) used as a screening instrument for addictive Internet use where participants who scored on 5 or more were deemed as dependant Internet users. Young demonstrated that dependant Internet users spent an average of 38.5 hours per week online, compared to 4.9 hours for non-dependant users. Furthermore, the research illustrated that non-dependant users viewed the Internet as a valuable source of information and a medium for personal and business communication. This contrasts with dependant users, who saw the Internet as a significant part of their lives, enabling them to meet and socialise with new people, with many often preferring their online friends to their real life relationships. The study likened the consequences of Internet addiction to that of other addictions, citing academic problems, work complications, distorted sleep patterns relationship difficulties, and denial of use as symptoms of excessive Internet use. Young provides a framework for further research on addictive Internet use, concluding that many individuals demonstrated impulse-control difficulty similar to pathological gambling or alcohol abuse. The proposal put forth by Young (1998) sparked much debate amongst academics which has continued to this day. Beard and Wolf (2001) contended Youngââ¬â¢s claim, arguing that her criteria for Internet addiction were too rigid and subjective for self-reported measures. They proposed that for an individual to exhibit Internet addiction, they must meet five necessary criteria, and one of three optional criteria, both deriving from Youngââ¬â¢s original questionnaire. Beard and Wolf go on to question the term ââ¬ËInternet addictionââ¬â¢ altogether, explaining that excessive Internet use cannot be defined as an addiction, as it does not result in all of the symptoms and behaviours associated with conventional addictions such as physical withdrawal. The controversy surrounding this term is currently bolder than the times of yesteryear with the Internetââ¬â¢s increasing hold on society. Starcevic and Aboujaoude (2016) firmly stand against the diagnosis ââ¬ËInternet addiction ââ¬â¢ citing some issues with its use. They argue against the term in a literal sense, citing that there is no evidence that addiction to the Internet as a medium exists, it is merely a facilitator for other behavioural addictions. Furthermore, and progressively so, the Internet is too vague a term as it refers to the limitless variety of behaviours that could be performed online. As such, the term ââ¬ËInternet addictionââ¬â¢ should be replaced by more specific behaviours. The concluding argument by Starcevic and Aboujaoude (2016) in the previous paragraph feeds into one of the major controversies surrounding Internet addiction, where two schools of thought have emerged. The generalised view believes that Internet addiction merits its own classification as a new psychiatric disorder, whereas the specialised view breaks down an individualââ¬â¢s Internet usage and defines their addiction in regards to specific online activities. After many years of debate, a modern study by Montag et al. (2015) set out to examine whether it is appropriate to differentiate between generalised and specialised Internet addiction. Participants from Europe and Asia completed two generalised scales (IAT and GPIUS-2) and a specialised scale developed to measure four domains of internet use; video gaming, shopping, social networks and pornography. The results of the study demonstrated that there are indeed specific forms of Internet addiction and that large parts of both gene ralised and specific addiction do not overlap. However, this is not true in the case of social network addiction as there was a considerable overlap between it and generalised Internet addiction. The authors argue that this may be because Facebook does not exist without the internet, unlike the other specified domains. Laconi, Tricard and Chabrol (2015) also took a keen interest in the relationship between generalised Internet addiction and specialised internet addiction. This study had participants complete an array of scales relating to specific Internet uses (gambling, sex, video watching, communication, information seeking, gaming, work, shopping) and generalised Internet use. The study determined that out of 378 participants just 29 showed symptoms of generalised Internet addiction, in contrast to 170 showing specific Internet addiction, prompting the authors to call for the distinction between the two. One of the biggest revelations for Internet addiction as a diagnosis came recently when the DSM-5 (2013) introduced a non-substance addiction for the first time in its history. Internet gaming disorder was added in Section 3 of the DSM-5 after careful review of over 250 publications in this area due to the significant amount of research in recent years and the consequences of the condition. Prior to the DSM-5, a substantial number of tests were used to examine Internet addiction, generating no clear diagnostic criteria. One of the more popular tests was proposed by Young (1998) in her original paper and known as the Internet Addiction Test (IAT). This scale added to the IADQ as it contained 20 items measured on a Likert scale. Its internal consistency has been examined amongst a variety of settings, most of which have proven to be positive (Widyanto McMurran, 2004). However, its factor structure has been inconsistently reported in different contexts challenging its original unidimen sional design (Lai et al., 2013). Through a systematic review of 68 epidemiological studies on Internet addiction, Kuss et al. (2014) reported that as many as twenty-one different scales were developed between the IAT in 1998 to the DSM-5 in 2013 in an attempt to examine an individualââ¬â¢s addiction to the Internet, each test with their own issues. Petry et al. (2014) discuss the inclusion of Internet gaming disorder in the DSM-5 by assembling international experts to achieve consensus about assessing this disorder in an array of contexts as defined by the nine criteria in the DSM-5. Pre-occupation refers to the individual thinking about gaming not only while playing but also while they are not playing. Withdrawal refers to particular symptoms that emerge when one is unable to initiate gaming, or when one is trying to withhold from gaming. Tolerance denotes that an individual feels the need to game for extended periods of time to feel sufficient excitement. The fourth criterion is unsuccessful attempts to stop or reduce gaming. A person with Internet gaming disorder may also protrude a loss of interest in other hobbies or activities. The individual may also continue to game excessively even though they are aware of the negative consequences that arise from this behaviour. Deception refers to lying about the extent of their time gaming to others. The penultimate criteria the authors discussed is using gaming as an escape or relief from a negative mood, such as feelings of anxiety, sadness or depression. A person with Internet gaming disorder may also jeopardise or lose valuable relationships, work opportunities or educational opportunities due to their attraction to gaming. For the DSM-5 to deem an individual with this disorder, they must meet five or more of the criteria discussed within the past year. However, as Internet gaming disorder is situated in Section 3 of the DSM, which contains emerging measures and models, and due to the relative newness of the field, much more research must be conducted to produce a definitive set of criteria. Of all specific Internet addictions, online gaming has arguably garnered the most attention to date from academics and researchers alike. Similar to the studies previously discussed, Rehbein and Mà ¶ÃŸle (2013) set out to determine whether video game addiction specifically could be distinguished as its own diagnosis in contrast to being attached to Internet addiction as a whole. A range of relevant data was collected from a large sample of 4436 school participants on their video game and Internet usage patterns, along with questions related to their psychological wellbeing. The results determined that video game addiction and Internet addiction can very much be regarded as two distinct nosological entities, and it is important to do so, as there are supreme differences in the sociodemographic characteristics between the two groups. The authors found that males primarily made up the group of video game addicts, whereas females predominately found themselves in the Internet addicted group. Early in the lifespan of the Internet, Young (1998) found that users were drawn to real-time services such as internet relay chat (IRC) and multi-user domains (MUD). As technology is advanced, these amenities developed further into three-dimensional graphical representations in the form of online games. Massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs) took the world by storm in the early 2000s through titles such as ââ¬Å"Everquestâ⬠, where users were able to play out the life of a character in an online world with other players. Ng and Wiemer-Hastings (2005) investigated the different usages between MMORPG players and Non-MMORPG players by collecting anonymous surveys posted on various gaming forums. Interestingly, MMORPG players were seen to spend significantly more time investing in online gaming. However, the authors emphasise that these players cannot be classified as addicted as they display opposing characteristics to an addict, in that they do not seek self-con fidence from the game, would not be irritated if they spent extended periods of time without playing and would find fun elsewhere if MMORPGs did not exist. The authors suggest that MMORPG players have a different perspective on social life, or labelled as introverted by some, and chose to socialise through online gaming rather than in the real world. Comparable to the term itself, the symptoms of Internet addiction have been hotly debated since its proposal in the mid-1990ââ¬â¢s (Valkenburg Peter, 2009). In the early years of Internet addiction, the predominant belief amongst researchers was that this disorder had a detrimental effect both psychologically and socially. This was demonstrated in a famous study by Kraut et al. (1998) where they analysed this very idea in a longitudinal study. Measures of Internet use were collected over a two-year period, and social and psychological well-being were measured through reliable self-reports by individuals who had never used the Internet prior. Like other studies at the time, Kraut et al. found that excessive use of the Internet was associated with increases in loneliness and depression and declines in social involvement Due to the increased accessibility of the Internet in a contemporary setting, many academics elude to the convoluted consequences of extreme Internet use in the modern day. Bessiere, Kiesler, Kraut and Boneva (2008) predicted, using previous hypotheses, that the way an individual uses the Internet will produce an increase or decrease in psychological and/or social well-being. A study similar to that of Kraut et al. (1998) was generated to decidedly distant results. Firstly, it was found that using the internet for things other than communication had no apparent consequences on well-being. Additionally, they found that using the Internet to communicate with family and friends actually had declining levels of depression. Whereas using the Internet as a means to interconnect with, and meet new people did induce increased levels of depression. Finally, the authors found that individuals with high levels of social support initially were more prone to negative social consequences in compar ison to those with low levels of social support. All aspects of Internet addiction are still up for debate. With the further protrusion of its presence in the everyday lives of more and more people, many studies have become invalid within a short period, making it problematic to keep up with the ever-changing landscape. Increased accessibility and affordability enable almost everybody the chance to be sucked in by the Internet, whereas in years gone past, especially in its inception, it was a more exclusive group. Perhaps this means that Internet addiction will become more widespread over the coming years, or contrastingly, the concept will die off due the normalisation of its overuse. As has been discussed throughout this review, many scales have been developed in an attempt to diagnose, and it is expected that much more will be established in the future as Internet use becomes increasingly prominent. It is evident that the distinction between generalised and specific Internet addiction needs to be entrenched to improve diagnoses, and this step has been taking with the introduction of the Internet Gaming Disorder in the DSM-5 (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). Much more research needs to be conducted within this field in the coming years to gain decisive conclusions. However researchers may be fighting a losing battle due to the Internetââ¬â¢s perpetual innovations.

What is Happiness? Essay -- John Stuart Mill Essays
What is happiness? People have agonized over this question for centuries. Let me start this essay by answering a somewhat easier question: what isnââ¬â¢t happiness? Happiness is NOT feeling good all the time. Happiness is a combination of human emotions and states of mind. Exploring this state of being has consumed the philosophical minds of the ages and will continue to do so for ages to come. In an unofficial poll of students at State University, I found that of the fifty-eight students and one professor, males and females of several ethnic backgrounds and age groups, that I asked the question "What is happiness to you?", all of them had very different physical, intellectual, or emotional motivator for their happiness. Only the professor stated what happiness was to him. The students, ranging in age from 20 years to 45 years, all spoke of material things that would make them happy. They couldn't seem to grasp "happiness" as a concept in itself. The questions that are asked when exploring the concept of happiness should begin with desire to know if it is a pleasure based in our basic and primitive emotions. Next, is happiness motivated by pure desire? Does a mental state of contentment produce happiness? Does happiness come from a simple, physical feeling? Maybe happiness is a combination of all of these. According to John Stuart Mill, The creed which accepts as the foundation of morals, Utility, or the Greatest Happiness Principle, holds that actions are right in proportion as they tend to promote happiness, wrong as they tend to produce the reverse of happiness. By happiness is intended pleasure, and the absence of pain; by unhappiness, pain, ... ...r abstract thought separates them from any other creature on earth, but it also makes them unique unto themselves. What makes one person happy may or may not make another person happy. Happiness, in and of itself, in my opinion, in unattainable. To be content with a minimum of worries is as close to absolute happiness as a person can come. For myself, I believe that true happiness is an illusion. I believe in the desire-driven theory of happiness. When I find the need for the illusion of happiness, I attempt to achieve it by fulfilling my temporary needs through the gratification of my immediate desires. I find that contentment and the drive to continue to achieve my desires is much more important than the illusion of happiness. Works Cited Pojman, Louis P. Globalization and genocide Essay
The twentieth century has seen a lot of inventions come into being, from the invention of the engine, to the manufacturing of airplanes. Then there came the aspect of globalization. The world that was so large started shrinking on a daily basis until finally, borders seemed to have evaporated into thin air even between continents. Today, a person may be in London in the morning and in the evening he is in Washington. Communication has also been made easier and more efficient in such a way that you can talk to a person who is thousands of miles away, as if you are talking to the person next door. The world has become a small community. Successes and failures However, there are shortcomings that have come with globalization. Lechner and Boli (2004) in their book The Globalization Reader argues that while there has been shortcoming of globalization because of the strain it has exerted on the environment thereby degrading it. While the countries all over the world have been working to see their economies develop, this has been at the expense of the environment. One of these causes of environmental degradation according to their argument is the destroying of the natural environment. Large tracts of forest covered land are destroyed each year leaving the land bare and in a few years no longer unproductive. This, they argue, is not the only cause of environmental degradation. Another cause is the releasing of harmful chemicals into the environment. Example is the Chernobyl nuclear accident. After this accident, there were many nuclear substances that were released into the environment and over the years have caused cancer. Fossil fuels have also contributed greatly to the destruction of the environment. While these have provided fuel for industries, carbon dioxide emissions has been on the rise thereby causing global warming. Are there ways and means to reverse the current trends of environmental degradation in order to make secure our future? However, despite all this destruction, there has been an effort to try and slow down if not to completely stop the rate at which the environment is destroyed. Whereas the governments have not been keen enough to conserve the environment, Lechner and Boli (2004) argue that there are environmentalists who have rallied for conservation of this precious environment. In 1992, Rio de Janeiro Declaration on Environment and Development proposed that, for a meaningful development to be achieved, environment conservation must come first. There are also who have argued that for environment to be conserved especially in poor nations, the rich nations must cancel their debts since the small governments spend all their earnings paying debts at the expense of local development, thus forcing it people to solely rely on an already deprived land hence furthering the effects of environmental destruction. Others have used all their minerals on debts without caring much on the effects this has on the environment. There are also organizations that were formed to champion for the protection of the environment. Their call is on the political class to make their priorities right by spending less on military and more on environment protection, not just for this generation but also for future generation. Issues of poverty have been cited as the biggest enemy to the protection of the environment. An example is of Mau forest in Kenya. While this forest has been the water catchments and the source of many rivers in Kenya, it faces the danger of being destroyed because of human activities. At the moment, part of the forest has been inhabited by people who are poor and therefore not willing to move out. The government of Kenya on the other hand is also unable to settle these people elsewhere since it doesnââ¬â¢t have resources. The neighboring nations namely Uganda and Tanzania face the same plight as Kenya and cannot help the Kenyan government yet these rivers drain in Lake Victoria which is shared among them. These activities that have affected a nation environmentally do not affect just one person. The Mau forest in Kenya is a good example. If the future of Mau forest is not solved, eventually, Egypt which doesnââ¬â¢t even border Kenya will be affected since it depends on water from Lake Victoria through river Nile for its irrigation. Human beings faced the danger of extinction on a daily, more so from environmental degradation. Nevertheless, it is possible to have a better world. A world where pollution is controlled and excellent environment that is not contaminated is the ultimate choice for everyone. There have been meetings called by different people all over the world to fight for the right to live in a non polluted environment. An urge to have those that are considered the minority in the society to participate in the process of policy making has been on the rise. Is it possible, when we are united together as a people, to fight for our environment? Genocide The effects of globalization have not been felt in the environmental circle alone. Social life in many places throughout the world has been altered because of globalization. According to Gellately and Kiernan (2003) examines the atrocities that have been committed against humanity, some among them committed by the ââ¬Ëcivilizedââ¬â¢ as they championed for globalization. For example, there were mass murders that were committed at Guatemala, sponsored by the US government. In this revolution, the Mayan community was massacred and the world kept mum. Even when as a commission to investigate these events was setup, their report did not reveal the motives behind these killings, and the people behind it. The Mayan people are not the only ones that have been affected. Yugoslavia in 1991 faced genocide whereby a minority group was targeted and massacred. Politics and cruelty has been the order of the day. Politicians have been known to use people to get into position and then turn against these people. These acts of brutality are yet to end. Societies throughout the world still experience mass murders in their midst. Technology, which is supposed to ease the way life, is now being used against people. US is not spared either. September 11 attacks proved that people are willing to go all the way to destroy others. While we may toy around with the idea of whether to reevaluate our stand towards globalization or not, we must always remember that a time is coming when we shall not enjoy the relaxation our beaches offer us as we do today. At that time, there will be no trees for our wildlife and therefore no rain. For countries in Sub Saharan Africa, this will mean that there will be no food since these communities have always depended on rain for their agricultural activities. Just as a reminder, that time is already at hand. We are already seeing the effects of globalization on our environment. Yet, the question we ask ourselves is, ââ¬ËAre we ready to shove the idea of globalization beneath the carpet and look for a new alternative? ââ¬â¢ Some of the greatest crimes against humanity were committed at a time when we considered the world to be on a highway to becoming one community with no barriers. That was in the mid 1990s, a genocide that left many dead with many other maimed. Yet, the global community never spoke a single word until it was all over. According to Gellately and Kiernan (2003), these acts of brutality have often been sparked by oppression through the years by those who are powerful. After many years of oppression, those who have been oppressed pour their anger on those who are helpless and vulnerable and therefore cannot defend themselves. In the end, we witness the kind of crimes like those that happened in Rwanda (p 375). We cannot also ignore the fact that technological advances in warfare have also been the cause of genocides in our communities. Cases in point are the Nazis in Germany; the use of poisonous gases against the Kurds in Iraq; the September 11 attacks on US soil. These have all employed the use of technology to perpetrate crime. Thus, the globalization that was supposed to bring us together has also been the source of death and segregation in our communities. Are we as human being going through a transition that is changing us for the worse i. e. turning us against each other? Is globalization therefore the cause of genocide or a solution to eradicating genocide in the current world? Are we our own enemies? References Lechner, F & Boli, J. (2004). The globalization reader. The History of Automobile Names
The automobile has gone by several names in the past and still continues to as variations of motor vehicles have been spun off. For example, there is the common car term, but word automobile is often used as well. Then theres truck, jeep, station wagon, bus, van, minivan and hatchback among others. However, it all began with a battle of semantics that pre-dated the word automobile, which was coined at the turn of the 20th century. So what other names for motor vehicles have famous inventors used prior to automobile? One good way to find out is to look at the names that were used in their patent applications. Heres a brief rundown of various car names throughout history: American inventor, engineer and businessman Oliver Evansà applied for a U.S. patent in Philadelphia in 1792 for an invention he called oruktor amphiboles, which translates to ââ¬Å"amphibious digger.â⬠His vehicle was designed to be a steam-powered car that rolled out of his shop in 1804. Initially created for the Philadelphia Board of Health for the purpose of dredging and cleaning docks, the vehicle was capable of moving on both water and land.George Selden, a patent attorney from Rochester, New York, received a patent for something he called a road machine in 1879. Due to existing laws at the time, the patent was pre-dated to 1877. Selden expanded its claims over the years. And by 1895, he had a patent for a three-cylinder motor vehicle. While he never actually produced a car, the patent allowed him to collect royalties from all American car manufacturers. Companies paid Seldens holding company, the Association of Licensed Automotive Manufacturers, for the patent licensing rights to build cars. The fact that Selden hadnââ¬â¢t actually followed through with his idea made the patent questionable to some manufacturers. Henry Ford,à industrialist and founder of the Ford Motor Company, was one of those who took issue with Seldonââ¬â¢s licensing fees and refused to pay it. Selden took Ford to court in 1904, but the judge ordered an automobile built according to the Selden patent. It was an utter failure and Seldenââ¬â¢s patent was overturned in 1911. Selden could no longer collect royalties and car manufacturers were free to build their vehicles at lower cost without this added expense.à Theà Duryea brothersà patented their motor wagon in 1895. They were bicycle makers who became fascinated with the concept of automobiles and gasoline engines.à "The new mechanical wagon with the awful name automobile has come to stay..."New York Times (1897 article) The New York Times mention of the name ââ¬Å"automobileâ⬠was the first public use of the term by the media and eventually helped to popularize the name for motor vehicles. Credit for the name actually goes to a 14th century Italian painter and engineer named Martini. While he never built an automobile, he did draw up plans for a man-powered carriage with four wheels. He came up with the name automobile by combining the Greek word auto -- meaning self -- and the Latin word, mobils, which means moving. Put them together and youve got a self-moving vehicle that doesnt need horses to pull it. Other Names for Motor Vehicles Over the Years Of course, the other popular name for an automobile is the car is thought to be derived from Latin word carrus or carrum, which means wheeled vehicle. It can also be a variation of the Middle English term carre, meaning cart. Other possibilities include the Gaulish word karros (a Gallic chariot) or the Brythoic word Karr. These terms originally referred to wheeled horse-drawn vehicles such as a cart, carriage or wagon. Motor car is the standard formal name for cars in British English. There were other early media references to motor vehicles and these included names such as autobaine, autokenetic, autometon, automotor horse, buggyaut, diamote, horseless carriage, mocole, motor carriage, motorig, motor-vique and the oleo locomotive. The word truck may have come from truckle, which means small wheel or pulley. Its derived from the Middle English word trokell from the Latin word trochlea. It may have also come from the the Latin word trochus. The first known usage of truck was in 1611, used in reference to the wheels on ships cannon carriages. The word bus is a shortened version of the Latin word omnibus and van is short for the original word caravan.
